Artificial tears can provide quick relief when your eyes feel dry, irritated, or gritty. However, that comfort may not last when the underlying cause of chronic dry eye remains untreated. For many patients, the problem is meibomian gland dysfunction, also known as MGD.
At Eye Care & Wear, we offer OptiLight IPL therapy for patients with dry eye disease caused by MGD. This noninvasive treatment targets inflammation and poor oil gland function, helping us provide a more personalized approach to long-term dry eye relief.
A healthy tear film contains water, mucus, and protective oils. The meibomian glands along the eyelids produce the oil layer that keeps tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked or inflamed, tears may evaporate before they can properly protect the eyes. Lubricating drops can add temporary moisture, but they do not always improve how the meibomian glands function.
Symptoms that may indicate MGD include:
• Burning, stinging, or gritty eyes
• Fluctuating or blurry vision
• Redness around the eyes or eyelids
• Excessive watering caused by irritation
• Discomfort while wearing contact lenses
During a comprehensive dry eye evaluation, we can determine whether MGD, inflammation, or another condition is contributing to your symptoms.
Intense pulsed light therapy uses controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light on the skin beneath the eyes. At Eye Care & Wear, we use OptiLight by Lumenis, an FDA-approved IPL treatment for dry eye disease associated with meibomian gland dysfunction.
OptiLight is designed to reduce inflammation and treat abnormal blood vessels that may contribute to the dry eye cycle. The treatment may also improve the quality and flow of oils from the meibomian glands. We may follow IPL therapy with gentle gland expression to help clear blockages and support a healthier tear film.
A typical OptiLight treatment plan includes four sessions scheduled two to four weeks apart. Each appointment usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
Before treatment, we place protective shields over the eyes and apply a cooling gel to the treatment area. You may feel a mild warming sensation as the light pulses are delivered. OptiLight requires little to no downtime, so most patients can return to their usual activities after the appointment.
Treatment results vary based on the cause and severity of dry eye disease. We may also recommend prescription eye drops, eyelid care, punctal plugs, or other therapies as part of your personalized dry eye treatment plan.
We do not believe chronic dry eye symptoms should be managed with guesswork. By evaluating your tear film, eyelids, and meibomian glands, we can identify the factors contributing to your discomfort and determine whether IPL therapy is right for you.
